TSMC's presence in the United States is already established, with a completed fabrication plant in Phoenix, Arizona, currently producing chips based on the 4-nanometer generation. However, this plant's technology node is not yet suitable for Apple's most advanced processors, which are being produced using 2nm technology in Taiwan. A second Arizona fab, designed for 3nm and 2nm chip production, is under construction and slated to commence operations in 2028. Further solidifying its US commitment, TSMC revealed plans in April 2024 for three additional semiconductor plants in Arizona, followed by an announcement in March 2025 detailing even more facilities, its first US-based packaging sites, and a dedicated research center.

Advanced Packaging and Future Technologies

A key aspect of TSMC's US expansion includes the development of "Advanced Packaging" capabilities. This sophisticated process involves integrating multiple chiplets and memory stacks onto a single substrate, enhancing performance and efficiency. Historically, TSMC has relied on local partners like Amkor for such advanced processing in the US. The newly announced facilities are likely targeted for deployment around 2030 or later, with TSMC aiming to bring its most cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to the US. While CEO C.C. Wei committed to "2 nanometers or better" for future US production, he stopped short of guaranteeing the absolute latest generation, which TSMC plans to maintain a lead on in Taiwan with A13 and A12 technologies by 2029.

"I assume that demand from today onwards – probably until 2029 or 2030 – will be very strong," stated Wei.
