AT&T Taps OpenAI to Revolutionize In-House Legal Operations with AI

AT&T is embarking on a significant transformation of its in-house legal operations by partnering with OpenAI. The initiative aims to leverage artificial intelligence to streamline how its large legal department accesses information, manages requests, and provides counsel to the broader business.

Enhancing Legal Knowledge Access

AT&T's legal department, comprising hundreds of lawyers and legal professionals globally, faces the challenge of assembling facts, documents, and relevant past work to advise the business effectively. David McAtee, AT&T’s Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel, highlighted the importance of making this accumulated expertise more accessible. "Our partnership with OpenAI is going to allow us to build that plumbing that powers the knowledge layer throughout the company and that all of us will draw into,” McAtee stated.

The collaboration builds upon LegalEdge, AT&T's existing team dedicated to applying AI to legal matters. The next phase involves connecting the company's vast repository of legal knowledge directly to the workflow of lawyers handling incoming requests from across the business. This integration is crucial for enabling legal teams to respond swiftly while mitigating risks.

AI-Powered Intake and Prioritization

A central component of this strategy is the development of an advanced intake system. Bill Ryan, AT&T’s Chief Compliance Officer, described this system as having "a front door where we have natural language intake." This AI-driven system is designed to automatically classify and prioritize incoming legal requests. It will also connect these requests with relevant precedent, research, and past case files, providing legal professionals with essential historical context and suggested initial steps.

This enhanced intake process aims to equip lawyers with a more informed starting point, significantly reducing the time spent on preliminary information gathering. Ryan emphasized the potential for scaling the department's impact, noting, "What most excites me about the future is expanding our ability to provide legal judgment at greater scale.”

Maintaining Human Oversight

Despite the integration of advanced AI tools, AT&T maintains that human judgment remains paramount. McAtee reiterated this principle, stating, "The decision making will always remain with the lawyers.” The overarching goal of the partnership is to empower legal professionals by providing them with readily accessible, high-quality information, thereby freeing them to focus more on applying their expertise and strategic judgment to complex legal matters.
